MIRIAM AKOTO, Ph.D.

This portfolio is aimed at giving future employers and colleagues a picture of who I am as a person and as a foreign language educator. It is also intended to operate as a running record of my professional development, accomplishments, and future goals.

French 101

French 101 is a beginning language course organized around five general notions: communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities.  Students learn traditional language skills interwoven with these five notions. They learn  interpersonal communication skills and how to interpret written and oral texts with increasing accuracy and sophistication over the course of a semester.

The overall goal of the French 101 is to help students develop cultural and linguistic knowledge that allows them to feel comfortable in listening, reading, writing, and speaking in French.

TAUGHT COURSES

French 102

French 102 is also another beginning language course organized around five general notions: communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities.  Students learn traditional language skills interwoven with these five notions.  Students learn  interpersonal communication skills and how to interpret written and oral texts with increasing accuracy and sophistication over the course of the semester.

As a follow up course to French 101, the overall goal of the French 102 is to help students develop cultural and linguistic knowledge that allows them to feel comfortable in listening, reading, writing, and speaking in French. The first three courses in the basic language sequence introduce students to such topics and notions as talking about one's self and others (family and friends), referring to activities and events (in present and past story-telling), occupations and pastimes (school, work, and things people do in their free time), and the world around us (global communication, residence, fashion, media, preservation of the planet, etc.). Comparisons to current French and Francophone life and society build the foundation for cultural literacy and familiarity with the French-speaking world.
