VOCABULARY LESSON PLAN

Theme: Food

Topic: Buying ingredients at the market

Introduction

This lesson utilizes a variety of means to reinforce students’ exposure to the vocabulary words that are related to food and their overall language learning. In this lesson, students first look for cognates in a YouTube video of people buying food ingredients in the market in order to recognize that their existing decoding skills are valuable in understanding words in the second language. This is video watching strategy that is applied here to vocabulary recognition will help reinforce strategies in learning both skills.

Students then associate words with pictures before seeing what the word means in the second language; in this way the students link the ideas to the words rather than merely linking the word’s meaning in the L1 to the lexical representation in the L2. Then students use some of the words learned to write a shopping list. Then students play Pictionary in small groups with the vocabulary. Finally, students revisit the YouTube video from the first activity and notice how many more words they recognize. These activities are layered to get students to both see and use the words numerous times within a single lesson.

Lesson learning goals

Students will be able to:

Linguistic

  • communicate beyond immediate and personal areas of interest, incorporating developed cultural knowledge into addressed topics and issues

  • know the appropriate language use depending on genre and setting.

  • identify and use vocabulary related to the food-making process (names of ingredients, cooking utensils, measurement of quantity, etc)

Cognitive

  • develop familiarity with a variety of authentic resources, including those available on the web.

  • develop skills that enables them to create meaning from authentic texts.

Sociocultural

  • draw comparisons between their culture and the culture of the target language. They will also be able to understand the influence of culture on the use of language.

  • Students will be sensitized to the differences between the units of measurement used in the US and in France.

Lesson learning objectives

Students will be able to:

Linguistic

  • learn how to identify cognates in kitchen vocabulary and how to use measurements in describing quantity.

  • use setting-appropriate vocabulary related to food in a way that is comprehensible to a native or near-native speaker (with 80%-90% accuracy).

Cognitive

  • to use reading strategies when approaching a new text in the L2.

  • critically evaluate practices related to food in both target and home languages.

Sociocultural

learn different food stuffs and ingredients in France

draw comparisons between these ingredients of food in both target and home languages.

Materials to be used for the lesson: YouTube video, pictures of food, and Pictionary.
