LESSON PLAN FOR PRESENTATIONAL COMMUNICATION (WRITING)

Theme: Food

Topic: Preparing a recipe

Introduction

The lesson is designed to help students improve on their writing skills particularly in the area of writing a recipe. To achieve this, students are exposed to different kinds of authentic texts such as pictures of food, a recipe website, and a youtube video. Through, brainstorming and semantic mapping, students are helped to critically analyse the grammatical forms and vocabulary related to the topic. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to transform the knowledge acquired by creating a recipe of their favorite cake.

Lesson learning objectives

Students will be able to:

Linguistic

• learn how to use the infinitive and the imperative form of verbs in creating recipes.

• learn how to use measurements in describing quantity.

• use setting-appropriate vocabulary related to food in a way that is comprehensible to a native or near-native speaker (with 80%-90% accuracy).

Cognitive

• identify different ways of writing recipes.

• critically evaluate practices related to food in both target and home languages.

Sociocultural

• learn different kinds of cake in France

• draw comparisons between the ingredients of food in both target and home languages.

Lesson learning goals

Linguistic

• Students will be able to know the appropriate language use depending on genre and setting.

• Students will be exposed to vocabulary related to the food-making process (names of ingredients, cooking utensils, measurement of quantity, etc)

Cognitive

• Students will be able to develop abilities in critical and functional analysis of texts by comparing written and visual genres of texts.

• Students will develop skills that enable them to create meaning from authentic texts.

Sociocultural

• Students will be able to draw comparisons between their culture and the culture of the target language. They will also be able to understand the influence of culture on the use of language.

• Students will be sensitized to the differences between the units of measurement used in the US and in France.

Materials to be used for the lesson: pictures of food, a recipe website, and a youtube video.
