LESSON PLAN FOR PRESENTATIONAL COMMUNICATION (SPEAKING)

Theme: Food

Topic: Ordering food from a Restaurant or Fast-Food.

Introduction

The lesson is designed to help students improve on their speaking skills when it comes to ordering food from a restaurant. To achieve this, students first watch a commercial from alloresto.fr . The aim of this commercial is to not only prepare students for the day’s lesson but also to culturally expose students about a current way of ordering food in France. Through, brainstorming and semantic mapping, students point out the main message of the commercial and compare it to similar restaurant offers here in the US. Students then turn to page 241 in their textbooks, Francais-Monde and read the dialogue. Next they listen to an audio of a couple on a date in a restaurant. At the end of the lesson, students of groups of three will create a scene in a restaurant in Paris with one playing the waiter/waitress and the others playing the clients.


Lesson learning objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will:


Linguistic

• learn about the kinds of food and drinks served in a restaurant or in a fast-food.

• learn how to order food using partitive articles and the conditional tense.

• practise asking questions using both est-ce que and the inversion.

Cognitive

• develop skills to make textual comparisons.

• critically evaluate practices related to food and restaurants in both target and home languages.

Sociocultural

• learn different levels of formality in France

• draw comparisons between to the different kinds of French dishes and their order (le plat principal, l’entree, le dessert etc.) and that of the US.

• know order food from a restaurant or fast-food using appropriate vocabulary.

• make suggestions and make inquiries about food.

Cognitive

• develop abilities in critical and functional analysis of texts by comparing written and audio genres of texts.

Sociocultural

• draw comparisons between American food and French food. They will also be able to understand the influence of culture on the use of language.


Materials to be used for the lesson: a tv commercial, text from Francais-Monde, and an audio of a couple on a date in a restaurant.
